The villages

Just over one in three inhabitants lives outside the town, in villages along the river and the roads towards Dorotea, Fredrika and Sollefteå. Several of them have something that makes a detour worthwhile: a mill, a hostel, a community hall to hire.

Gafsele: South of the town on the Ångermanälven river. The village's old school from the 1950s is a hostel, Gafsele Lappland Hostel, and in Västra Gafsele is the fishing and hunting lodge Lappland Pro Natur. The road here is national road 90 towards Sollefteå.
Torvsjö: About 25 kilometres north-west of Åsele, with the mills on the Skarpsjöbäcken stream: six small horizontal-wheel mills, a threshing barn, a sawmill and a small power station that the farmers built from 1752 onwards. A listed building since 1972 and of national interest. Restored in the 1960s so that the mills run.
Fredrika: 60 km to the east on lake Viskasjön, its own municipality until 1974, with a hotel, a campsite, a temple and Björnlandet National Park. Has a page of its own.
Avasjö: A village west of the town with a hostel, four rooms with a kitchen, and a cabin to let. One of the places the market refers people to when Åsele is full.
Tallsjö: East of Åsele on the road towards Fredrika. The community hall lets two rooms with eight beds, kitchen, shower and laundry room.
Lomsjö: West of the town towards Dorotea. One of the larger villages in the western part of the municipality.
Baksjöliden: On the road towards Fredrika, with an old mill site that the municipality lists among its heritage sites.
Sörnoret, Borgsjö, Östernoret and Lillögda: Villages that let a village cottage, a community hall or, in Lillögda, the former chapel. Contact details are on the accommodation page, taken from the market's accommodation list.
