What is Stockholmsgata?

A nature reserve on the county boundary with Västernorrland, about 50 km south of Åsele, where a glacial river some 9,400 years ago cut a canyon 1.5 kilometres long with walls over 40 metres high. The name comes from its resemblance to the alleys of Gamla stan in Stockholm. The trail runs from pine heath down to the floor of the canyon, past the giant's kettle. The access road is poor, so high ground clearance is recommended.

Things to do in Åsele

57 nature reserves and a national park on 4 544 km². What draws people here outside the market week is, in order, the forest, the fishing and the dog sledding, plus a couple of things you do not expect: a Buddhist temple and an eighteenth-century mill that still runs.

Heritage area and market ground · Åsele

Seventeen buildings and fifty exhibitions: six church cottages moved here from Övre torget during the Second World War, a costume museum, a Sámi collection, a postal museum and a model of the town's development since 1648. Guided tours in summer. Kaffestugan and Bagarstugan can be hired. Åsele market, the winter market and the Christmas market are held here.

A brick basilica on the church hill by the river, consecrated in 1936 after the previous stone church burned down in 1934. Designed by Knut Nordenskjöld, with an altarpiece by Gunnar Torhamn. The first church on the site was built in 1648, the year from which the market counts its history.
Torvsjö kvarnar

Listed building · Torvsjö, about 25 km north-west of Åsele

The farmers' water-powered works on the Skarpsjöbäcken stream: six small horizontal-wheel mills, a threshing barn, a sawmill with a shingle plane and a small power station, the oldest from 1752. Restored in the 1960s, a listed building since 1972 and of national interest for heritage conservation. Service building with an exhibition.

A Thai Theravada temple on a hill by Fredrika, begun after the monk Phramaha Boonthin Taosiri's decision in 2004. A 4.5-metre statue of Luang Pu Thuat was raised in 2006, and an eight-metre Buddha and marble elephants followed in 2007 to 2008. Open to all, with hundreds of visitors a month in summer.
