September to October
The season of the hunt and the berries. The elk hunt in October rules everyday life, the cloudberries around Fredrika have been picked and the lingonberries are next in line. Björnlandet has its best month, and when the darkness comes back the river mirrors the northern lights.
October in Åsele is the month of the elk hunt, and it shows at the workplaces. Fredrika Hotell is built around hunting and fishing guests, and Lappland Pro Natur in Gafsele guides. The hunting seasons are set by the County Administrative Board.
The villagers of Fredrika themselves count the cloudberry bogs and the lingonberry forest among the village's assets. The cloudberries ripen in late July and August, the lingonberries in September. The right of public access applies, with consideration for reindeer grazing and for the reserves' regulations.
In September the national park's old-growth pine forest is at its best: dry, free of mosquitoes and with the birches yellow between the fire-scarred pines. The trail loops are snow-free into September, but the change can come fast. The cabins are there all year round.
Trout and grayling spawn in autumn, and in the Ångermanälven and Gideälven the fishing is often at its best in the last weeks before the areas close. The rules for each fishing conservation area are on ifiske.se.
The reserve between Åsele and Dorotea is an autumn hike in miniature: boardwalk across the bog, then steeply up to the summit cabin at close to 700 metres with views over forest and lakes. Höjdakojan has four beds that can be booked.
Chanterelles, boletes and hedgehog mushrooms in the forests closest to the town after rainy weeks. Some years a lot, other years almost nothing.
The nights are black again from late August, and from September the Ångermanälven mirrors the northern lights on clear evenings. Go down to the river, away from the street lights.
The artworks along the road from the coast to Borgafjäll pass through Åsele municipality, and autumn is a good time to drive the stretch without traffic.
Åsele has no mountains, and so no red heath. Autumn's colour here is the birch's yellow between dark pines, and on Björnlandet's burnt ground the trees stand with black fire scars in their trunks dating from 1831. The bogs turn ochre, the cloudberry leaves red, and in the mornings the mist lies over the river until the sun takes it.
